Strontium, like calcium, is a bone-seeking element when injected. A radio-isotope, Sr89, can be used to treat men when prostate cancer has spread to the bones. Sr89 is an effective way to kill bony metastases, thereby reducing bony pain, fractures and the need for external beam therapy. Side effects are negligible as long as the pre-treatment blood count is satisfactory. Sr89 can be repeated every 6 months, if required.
