"Bezzina House" Cancer Care Lodge

Bezzina House was built through the generous support of the Community, following a public appeal by The St. George Hospital & Community Health Service.

A community committee, many that have been involved with the establishment of the Prostate Cancer Institute and under the guidance of Professor John Kearsley and Chairman John Green, progressed the site on the corner of Gray Street and Short Street Kogarah.

After demolition of existing buildings, the committee set about raising funds and enlisting support from various organizations to assist with the project.

After raising more than $700,000, the committee was boosted by a major contribution from successful local builder Michael Bezzina. Michael not only contributed much to the development of the facility but also generated support from many people within the building trade. He was also offered outstanding support from Rob Robson, the committee representative.

The project was completed in June 1998 and opened by the Governor and appropriately named Bezzina House by the committee.

It is a purpose built lodge, less than 100 metres to the entrance of The St. George Hospital and the Cancer Care Centre.

It provides comfortable, low cost, home-away-from-home accommodation for cancer patients and their families undergoing cancer treatment at the St. George Hospital. It has 15 self-contained units, some with wheelchair access located in three wings, two on the ground floor and one on the upper level.

The facility is designed around a sunny courtyard and garden area with a barbecue area on the 2nd floor. Accommodation Rates are $33.00 per night per unit. Bookings can be made in advance once a confirmed booking for treatment is made by telephoning the Manager Monday to Friday on (02) 9350 2555 or 9350 1111 pager 828 or email:greatorexa@sesahs.nsw.gov.au.
