Supporting people living with cancer – our history

From humble beginnings with the building of Bezzina House the main focus has always involved improving facilities for our patients and their families.

From 2002 to 2019 various celebration balls, golf days, major sponsorships, significant local council donations, in kind donations from various trades, bequests from past patients and many local community group donations enabled the committee to gather funds at a staggering rate. These funds have all been channelled into construction works for the Cancer Care Centre to improve its physical facilities. The overall objective was to create space on the ground floor of the Cancer Care Centre to allow improved patient care and amenities.

1998 Bezzina House This is where it started with the establishment of a 15 unit facility 100 metres from the Cancer Care Centre to house patients and their families whilst receiving treatment for cancer. 2002 Prostate Cancer Institute PCI The Prostate Cancer Institute was formed in 2002 to address the needs of men with prostate cancer. To support the work of the PCI a fundraising committee was formed. The main aim, to improve facilities at St George Cancer Care Centre. 2007 Office Suite Looking to the future the committee raised funds to build 9 offices on the first floor of the Cancer Care Centre. The aim was to create space for the Prostate Cancer Institute treatment areas. 2011 Brachytherapy Bunker The Brachytherapy bunker is treating men with prostate cancer. It is the only public facility providing brachytherapy in NSW. The operating suite and CT room are open for business. 2013 Clinical Research Unit A much deserved upgrade to the Clinical Research Unit finally happened. The Clinical Research Unit today remains an important part of St George Cancer Services. The unit is lead hospital for many trials both international and local. 2015 PCI & STGCC The committee looks to all cancer types and forms St George Cancer Care Incorporated. Both entities look to improve the life of people with cancer. 2016 5th Floor Pitney Building An additional floor was added to the Pitney Building to house 33 staff. The relocation of staff to the open plan office allows the ground floor of the Cancer Care Centre to become a patient treatment zone. 2016 Planning Cancer Care Centre Architects are engaged to redesign the Cancer Care Centre treatment spaces and waiting areas. We look to improve all spaces and expand beyond our current boundaries, increasing the foot print of the centre. 2017 – 2019 Construction 2017 is the start of major renovations and by 2019 we are complete. We have increased our clinic rooms, expanded our waiting spaces, improved the chemotherapy unit and included a quiet atrium. All with no closure of the Centre.
